Re: Why Other "Utopias" Fail
Having a property that we can do some controlled hunting would be nice to help clear any hazardous animals from the area but in trade id like to have there hides.

Their meat could be useful as well. What's more, if we have a lot of land we could allow hunters to use it temporarily for a fee. There's actually a pretty good market for that sort of thing.

yes we can actually use almost every part of most animals but i think we should keep outside hunters off the property mainly so we can control the animal population more for a resource.

Re: Why Other "Utopias" Fail
So we'd really just be starting a town from scratch...? No internet or luxuries? Living like the Amish?

We'll start from scratch and work our way up. We'll have as many luxuries as possible as soon as possible, but for the first few days (at least) we'll probably be living in sub-Amish conditions.

I highly doubt any of us are technophobes. Like Kanta said, we're looking to have as many modern conveniences as possible.
That said, the town probably won't have "all the comforts of home", seeing as it will almost definitely be located in a rural, isolated area. For one, expect the internet to be quite a bit slower than it is in the city.

Re: Why Other "Utopias" Fail
Don't forget a big vegetable and herb garden, and fruit trees, nut trees (but they can pose an allergy risk too..)
Worm farm/compost area
I am not extremely knowledgeable about hunting but my father is a butcher and I know some animals carry certain diseases...I remember him telling me about having to remove worms from sheep brains and worms from pig livers..
If someone was not a very experienced hunter or butcher, I am assuming there could be a possibility to get sick from some animals?

Re: Why Other "Utopias" Fail
This is a dead thread, but I think it should be revived, since I'm really worried about this project failing for some of the reasons mentioned.
One point that wasn't mentioned: internal distrust and arguments.
I can see this happening if we go communist. Effective communism takes so much regulation...undoubtedly, you'd have people arguing that their rations aren't fair, or that so and so isn't working hard enough. The government might get too oppressive. Some form of capitalism would be easy, and it would avoid all arguments like that.

Re: Why Other "Utopias" Fail
Infighting is definitely something we'll need to watch for. Personally I hope that periodic community meetings and discussions should take care of most of it, but...
And I do agree with you, "true" communism just wouldn't be a good idea. Attempting to split incomes, implement work quotas, and manage every single piece of communally-owned property would ruin us.
Admittedly, we would definitely borrow some ideas from communism - utilizing certain parts of the community as public property, such as sharing automobiles or eating in a dining hall, can be quite beneficial. It has also been suggested that members may be able to earn basic necessities by working for the community, if they so choose. Furthermore, in the very beginning when the basic infrastructure of the town is still being set up, we will need to engage in some "communist" practices out of necessity. Provisions will be scarce and shelter will be limited, not even considering the fact that no revenue can be made off the land for some time. Sharing supplies would be essential in the first few months.
At the end of the day however, like the nation it's located in, Agartha will have to remain predominantly capitalist. For one, I don't think we could legally "tax" residents enough to support any truly communist system.
EDIT: I apologize if this post sounds scatterbrained, I've been operating on about 2 hours of sleep for the past 2 days.
