Should the Hudspeth county property become a "Potential Location"? [RESOLVED]
(In essence, if this location gets enough votes, it will end up on a forthcoming list of "potential locations". Potential locations receive a lot of consideration and ultimately one will be chosen as the location for New Eden. We will also travel to potential locations to survey them.)
This poll will determine whether or not Quirinus's land in Hudspeth county (http://bneweden.runboard.com/t39,offset=0) should be added as a potential location.
PROS:
* Hundreds of acres of land for next to nothing. Very easy and inexpensive to expand.
* No building codes, so we can construct green homes without legal hassle.
* An ideal place to generate wind/solar power.
* Very isolated, which gives us privacy and independence. It's also in an area that's relatively safe from various disasters (tornadoes, earthquakes, rising sea levels)
* (For /x/philes) Quite possibly one of the creepiest locales on Earth. It's within 2 hours of El Paso, which is well known for its purported paranormal activity, and the land itself sounds spooky as !@#$:
quote:
The desert is littered with refuse from their forsaken attempts.
Thousands of tires are piled in a lot where the previous owners planned to use them to build a home.
On one lot, falling-down animal pens, horse skulls and scattered bones, and a trashed trailer are left over from an owner who raised wolves. One day he decided he'd had enough, let the pens open and headed for greener pastures. Jars of pickles and mustard still sit in the flung-open refrigerator.
Driving on rough roads that Sunset Roads carved out of the desert, some grown over and others washed out, crumbling homes, half-built cinder block structures, weather-beaten campers and recreational vehicles speckle the landscape.
Some customers have left more than trash behind.
Gregory Pederson drove from California in 2005 to visit the land he bought. When he didn't call after a few days, his wife got worried and called the local sheriff.
After searching the maze of roads nearly all day, officers found a beige Toyota with Pederson's body and dozens of empty pill bottles inside.
CONS:
* No water. The land is not nearby any lakes or rivers, the climate is dry as a bone, groundwater is hundreds of feet underground and apparently Texas is in the middle of a years-long drought. We would probably need to practice this just to get by, in combination with hardcore rainwater harvesting and atmospheric water generation.
* No utilities. We will have to supply our own electricity (unless we want to pay exorbitant fees to link ourselves up to power lines), dispose of our own sewage and trash, among many other things.
* Apparently, Hudspeth has long been used as a sewage sludge dump.
* This property is very isolated and hard to get to. It is almost two hours from the nearest city, and many of the roads are unkempt dirt trails. This will severely limit our number of visitors and residents.
* Due to the climate, rainfall, and nature of the soil, the property will probably be extremely difficult to grow crops on.
* All this !@#$.

Re: Should the Hudspeth county property become a "Potential Location"?
From that link about building codes:quote: the abundant underground water in the area.
Also, looking at the place in google earth, plots 2, 3, 6, 7, 16, and 17 have greenery, so there must be some sort of water somewhere around there.
I think that it very much depends on what the other "potential location[s]" are. I mean, we'd have to buy the land at least anywhere else, right? I think the only thing we've looked at that had that much land was that one place in Wyoming.

It should be added to the potential properties list, considering that he already owns it, but not be our final choice.
I personally think we should concentrate our efforts on New Hampshire, Maine, Wyoming, Oregon, Washington, & Appalachia.

Yeah, I think that despite all the drawbacks we should at least check it out. However, there are quite a few locations which could be better suited for us.

Alright, Hudspeth passes. I'll make a "Potential Locations" thread tonight.
