Private vs. Public Property
Regardless of whether this place ends up being communist, capitalist, or somewhere in between, there are some things that I believe should be publicly owned.
My general rule is that if you need less than one of it per person, it should be publicly owned. For example: cars. Cars hold four people comfortably, but most of the time only one person drives them. Furthermore, most of the time they sit in the driveway unused. It's both a waste of resources and money to own something unless you are going to use it to it's fullest potential. This would also apply to things like farm-equipment, specialized tools, etc.
So I suppose this thread should be about what things should be publicly owned, and what should be private property.

Re: Private vs. Public Property
Just stopping by to say I wholeheartedly agree with this idea.
As for what things should be publicly owned... hmm. Besides, the various public buildings, I think you've just about summed it up.

Re: Private vs. Public Property
I'm not sure I fully understand the point of view.
Do you mean that certain things should be bought with the town funds for use by all, or do you mean that if a person buys/owns something like a vehicle that it should be considered community property?

I'd assume the former unless the person were to willfully donate it. Appropriating members' possessions for 'the good of the community' would lead to... problems.
