Re: Souces of Revenue

Here are a few ideas, all of which we could gather/make ourselves:

*Crystals/precious stones
*Whittled wooden handicrafts
*Candles (if we raised bees)
*Pottery
*Essential oils & herbs with healing properties
*Various trinkets and charms, typical souvenir shop fare

On a related note, I recently visited a shop in a secluded corner of northern Florida. One guy operated it; he had a small garden and a chicken coop out back, and he sold pottery. According to him, he had more than enough food + revenue from the shop to live comfortably.

I think that most books involved with /x/ topics are in the public domain. We could do a small, indy publishing thing, maybe translate too. More of a "once we get off the ground" idea, but still something I'd love to do someday.

One thing to think about:

Are we going to use a currency in our settlement?

Maybe we should refrain from using anything but a barter system within the town and actual currency outside.

Maybe the whole barter thing only lasts until we're actually up on our feet and doing well.

Problem with the barter system is that those who work in the town (restaurant/stores/etc) would be broke. How would the be able to buy the supplies they need to fund their businesses?

Good point.
We already know that we will be forced to take other jobs outside of the town for income.
Everyone is going to have to have money.

But, how about we just use a give-and-take/share-what-you-can kind of thing between the people living there (and only the people living there) just until we have a solid structure going?

Re: Souces of Revenue

We should probably be getting real about this.

Anyone who can work who isn't a farmer will have to work outside of New Eden at a real job. We simply cannot self support New Eden just off of agriculture, knick knacks and herbs. Especially in the first year.(2015)

True, true. I was thinking we would progress from most everyone working in a "real job", to having a few farmers and one or two local businesses.

The local businesses would probably be a grocery store and a restaurant. The grocery store could sell knick-knacks and herbs, in addition to normal products.

Re: Souces of Revenue

well if green houses were erected we could grow fish and plants year round and the fish would help fertilize the plants more food year round more money coming in depending on how much land we have and were at a lake could be dug and fish brought in to grow and sell among other wildlife. Trinkets and baubles would make some money but there are ways around people having to work outside the community. pure bred pet breeding farms are one if the pets are actually takin care of would make a lot of money as well as chickens, sheep, and cows. If theres carpenters follow the amish on that one and make high end furniture and what not from wood off the land and replant. As for me i take scrap metal and melt it down with a homemade forge and make axes, knives, shovelheads and some odd trinkets.

Those are all great products, but we're just not going to get that many visitors who are looking to buy things.

We might be able to sell some stuff on e-bay, though...

Re: Souces of Revenue

I have an idea.
We contact a university's Humanities department. In exchange for allowing their students and faculty to observe and participate in "workshops" of direct democracy, small social units, emerging villages, (etc.) we "allow" them to "donate" to New Eden.

This provides (1) revenue and (2) new citizens, if we chose to accept them into New Eden.

Anyone familiar with Arcosanti? They do that there for architecture students, except in our case it won't be for months on end, but for weeks (ideally).

In the example of Arcosanti, the students provide much of the labor. I don't advocate 80% of our population to consist of students, but a couple extra hands would do wonders.
